Selection of approprate measurement scale is an important part of data collection, analysis, and presentation. A common feature of research is the attempt to have respondents communicate their feelings, emotion, attitudes, opinions, behaviors, practices and evaluations in some measurable form. In the data collection and data analysis, statistical tools differ from one data type to another. Based on the four levels of measurement, we use specific rating scales for social science research. In this lesson, students will be exposed to the common rating scales including: binary, Likert, semantic differential, and Guttman scales.
