Week 3: Mineral nutrition: Soil as a source of minerals. Passive and active transport of nutrients.
Soil contains minerals and organic matters. The minerals matter composed of peebles, sand and clay while the organic matter consists of decomposes remains of organisms called humas. The clay, humas and soil solution are important sources of minerals. The different theories involve for passive absorption are
- Diffusion theory
- Mass flow
- Ions exchange
- Donnan equilibrium theory
In case of active absorption of minerals, the concentration of minerals solute is much higher in absorbing cell than outside in most cases. This increased concentration of minerals in the cells is called solute acummulation which is selective process against the concentration gradient require energy.
