Week 1: Water relations to plants (water potential, osmotic potential, pressure potential, matric potential).

Plant absorbs water and minerals from the soil and use for different purposes like transpiration, photosynthesis and metabolic activities. To understand the absorption  by roots or uptake of water by roots, we should be having proper understanding of water relation equations and the terminolgies like osmosis, diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport, hypertonic solution, hypotonic solution, isotonic solution, plasmolysis and deplasmolysis. Different pathway adopted by the water to reach in the xylem in the root (apoplast pathway, simplest pathway and vacular pathway) as well as conduction of water from xylem of the root to xylem of the leaf by mean of adhesive, cohesive forces and tension (transpiration pull).
