Week 1: Introduction
The concept of World Englishes refers to forms of English that have been developed by non-native speakers. The plural form Englishes shows the diverse aspect of English today. This term is used to describe the different varieties of English in the multifarious sociolinguistic context.
Students are introduced with the history and causes of the global spread of English. They are also familiarised with the various terms used for English today, i.e. International English, Global English, English as Lingua Franca, World English, etc.
