Introduction :
The pancreas is a separate organ that has functions associated with the gastrointestinal tract, secretions from this organ pour into the duodenum, a part of the small intestine which is the longest part of the gastrointestinal tract (6 meters) where the rest of the secretions of the GIT mix and bring about the final processing of food ( complete digestion).
Clinically, studying pancreatic biochemistry helps in understanding and managing diseases that can be considered medical emergencies if complicated like, diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis and pancreatic insufficiency
Learning objectives :
- Describe the biochemical composition of pancreas
- Explain the factors neutralizing the highly acidic pH coming from the stomach
- Describe the Exocrine and endocrine functions of the pancreas
- Understand the hormonal and neuronal regulation of pancreatic secretion
- Overview of diseases associated with abnormal pancreatic secretion
