Lesson 11 Respiratory system

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

This system consists of nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs

Ethmoturbinates and dorsal part of the nasal meatus serves as organ of smell

Pharynx is a common passage both for the respiratory and digestive system

Larynx consists of thyroid cartilage, cricoids, epiglottis and paired arytenoids

Larynx serves as organ of voice production and regulates the volume of air,

and prevent the aspiration of foreign bodies

Trachea and bronchi are permanently open conducting tubes

The pleura, bones, joints and muscles of thorax are also part of this system

HORSE           Diverticulum nasi is present

Lungs have no lobes

Right lung has an intermediate lobe.

Tracheal rings overlap from right to left in cervical region, C shape in thorax

OX                  Muzzle is present

Right lung has two bronchi, and is larger than left lung.

Right lung has four lobes

Left lung has three lobes

Tracheal rings form ridge in thoracic region, C shape in cervical region
