Week 2: Problem 4.1,Problem 4.2, Problem 4.3, Problem 4.4, 4.1.3 Alignment of Polar Molecules
Learning outcomes:
In the previous week we have discussed the effect of extenal electric field on dielectric and discussed how the atoms are stretched and dipole are induced. In this week students will learn,
(a) how to find out the polarizability of induced dipoles and particularly polarizability of hydrogen atom, (b) that rule of thumb is not a general rule
(c) in aditon to stretching effect of external field on dielectric, what is rotational effect of external field on dielectric? what is torque of dipole and force on dipole if it is placed in external electric field?
Lecture Plan:
Lecture 1:
- Studying the Polaizability of differt atoms
- Problem: 4.1:Effect of Extentnal electric field on hydrogen atom
Lecture 2:
Problem: 4.1:Calculation of polarizability of hydrogen atom,
Problem 4.2:Study of rule of thumb (the induced dipole moment of an atom is proportional to the external fieldin electrostatics) and proving that it is not the general rule.
Lecture 3:
- Problem 4.4: Force of attraction between the neutral atom having some polarizability and charge q.
- 4.1.3 Alignment of Polar Molecules
- Torque on the dipole (in uniform external electric field)
- Force on the electric (in non uniform external electric field)
