Introduction to course:

Histology also known as microscopic anatomy, is the branch of biology which studies the microscopic anatomy of tissues. It examines the correlation between structure and function of tissue. The study of histology began with the development of light microscope.

Microscopic anatomy is the study of minute structure of body with the help of different types of microscopes, which are instruments that provide enlarged images of small objects. Knowledge of histology complements the study of gross anatomy. The knowledge of normal histology is of fundamental importance in understanding the subject of pathology. Histology teaches the art of recognizing the structure of cells and tissues and understanding how this is determined by their function.

Objectives of the course:

  1. To acquire a basic knowledge in histology and to understand the properties of cells and their interactions with one another as components of tissues and organs.
  2. To understand how structure and function correlate at the microscopic level.
  3. To be able to describe the normal structure and function of various cell types, tissues, and organs, and to differentiate their histological structures from each other through examination.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Describe the method of tissue preparation for histological examination.
  2. Describe the histological features of cell membrane.
  3. Explain the different features of the four  tissue types
  4. Explain the classification of connective tissue and their histological features.
  5. Describe the histological features of arteries and veins.
  6. Differentiate between different types of blood vessles.
  7. Describe the histology of respiratory system
  8. Explain the histological features of spleen, thymus, lymph node and tonsils.

Textbook for Course:

  1. Junqueira's Basic Histology Text and Atlas
  2.  Di Fiore's Atlas of Histology
  3. Wheater’s Functional Histology by Young and Heath.
  4. Medical Histology by Prof. Laiq Hussain.

System of Evaluation:

  • Assessment by short essay question and MCQs
  • Identification of slide in histology Lab
  • Final Exam
