Objectives

This course is designed to acquire knowledge about the various types of fossils and their significance. This will help the students to understand various morphological features of fossils; their classification, identification and distribution in geologic time. This course will provide interested students with a better understanding of one of the most valuable tools in stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental analyses, fossils. The course will introduce the major marine and non-marine invertebrate taxonomic groups found in the fossil record and what we know about them – their stratigraphic range, modes of life, and environmental preferences. This course is designed to acquire knowledge about the various types of fossils and their significance. This will help the students to understand various morphological features of fossils; their classification, identification and distribution in geologic time.

Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate their ability to describe and identify geologic materials. They will demonstrate their understanding of how life has evolved through geologic time and will demonstrate their ability to collect and analyze geologic information in field and laboratory settings.  Students will demonstrate their ability to apply scientific reasoning and technology to solve geologic problems and demonstrate their ability to work collaboratively to solve geologic problems and will demonstrate their ability to communicate scientific and technical information
effectively through appropriate oral, visual, and written presentation.
