Kashmir conflict as on going controversy
- Following the partition of India in 1947, the greatest source of
tension between the new states of India and Pakistan was to be the future
of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Shortly after partition, fear was expressed that "the problem [of Kashmir] may well drag on for
several years before a definitive solution is reached."' Indeed, after
nearly fifty years and three Indo-Pakistani wars, the Kashmir problem
still exists and may once more lead to hostilities in the region.
