OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION

The flow of electrons from NADH+ to oxygen (oxidation) results in ATP synthesis by phosphorylation of ADP by inorganic phosphate Pi, (phosphorylation). Therefore, there is a “coupling” between oxidation and phosphorylation.

• The most accepted hypothesis is the chemiosmotic hypothesis.

The energy generated by this proton gradient is utilized for ATP synthesis by ATP synthase (Complex V).
