Week 5: Enzymes

Any of numerous complex proteins that are produced by living cells and catalyze specific biochemical reactions at body temperatures. It is also defined as enzyme is a molecule that can be synthesized biologically or chemically (synthetically). Its major function is to act as a catalyst that speeds up a particular chemical reaction without changing the chemical reaction at the end of the reaction. Enzymes can make a chemical reaction millions of times faster than it would have been without it. A substrate binds to the active site of an enzyme and is converted into products. The ability of proteins to undergo shape changes and reversibly so, make them most suited to function as enzymes among other things.
