Introduction

The objective of this course is to equip the graduates with the knowledge of statistical theory, statistical techniques of data collection and analysis so that they can compete in the job market and contribute towards the economic development of Pakistan. When conducting social work research with the goal of advancing the knowledge in the field, statistics is an essential tool that enables social workers to draw a story out of the mountains of the statistical data unearthed. According to the definition of statistics it is the science of collecting, analyzing, summarizing, and making inferences from data sets. So the students will learn how to select an appropriate test, how to collect data, how to perform statistical calculations, and draw conclusions from the data in a step by step manner. Linking theory with practice will help students retain what they learn for use in future projects or any career where problem-solving is used.

Course Pre-requisite

Statistics is a topic within applied mathematics. Students are encouraged to refresh their basic mathematical skills prior to the course, or alternatively, to be prepared to spend some extra effort on mathematics during the course.

Learning Objectives

Introduction to Statistics provides students with skills for proficiency in descriptive and inferential statistics.

• The course shall give the students a basic understanding of the main topics  descriptive statistics, probability theory, estimation, and hypothesis testing
•  Be able to perform basic statistical calculations and graphical analyses.
•   Able to discuss and reflect upon ethical topics relevant to statistical methods.
