Course Description and Objectives of learning

The course of ‘’Introduction to cataloguing’’ is designed for the students of BS 5th semester to enable them the following knowledge and skills.

A brief history of cataloguing.
Kinds (Inner forms) of a library catalogue.
Physical forms (outer forms) of a library catalogue.
Levels of cataloguing
Qualities (characteristics) of a good library catalogue.
Reading the information resource technically to determine its subject for cataloguing.
Areas of catalogue.
Principles and important rules for cataloguing.

06 Week 3: ii- Title page, Verso page, Preface, Introduction, Author, Co-author, Surname, Editor, Compiler, Translator, Publisher, illustrator, Edition, Corporate body, Subject heading etc.

07 Week 4: i- History of cataloguing.

08 Week 4: ii-Development of cataloguing codes: a brief history.

09 Week 5: i- Reading the information resource technically to collect bibliographic detail for cataloguing.

10 Week 5: ii- Reading the information resource technically to determine its subject for cataloguing.

11 Week 6: i- Physical forms of catalogue (outer forms): book form, sheaf form, card form, computer off line, online, CD Rom. form, Micro-form, OPAC.

12 Week 6: ii- Merits and de-merits of each physical form of catalogue.

14 Week 7: ii- Role of union catalogue and shelf list catalogue. RDA: An introduction and purpose.
