Course Title: Advanced Insect Morphology

Course Code: ENT-7104

Credit Hours: 3(2-1)

Instructor: DR. MUHAMMAD ASAM RIAZ

Email: [email protected]

DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

The basic objective of this course is to prepare students to

  • Describe the external feature of insect head, thorax and abdomen.
  • Compare feature of different insect orders

The practical portion is planned to direct students towards dissection of insect external and internal organs. Students will perform dissection of different insect mouthparts and their external features. Student will also learn to draw those characters present on insect body.

COURSE CONTENTS

THEORY:

Introduction; study of structure of integument and its processes (setae, spines, spurs, scales, etc.);

modifications of various mouthpart structures,

segmentation and structure of head, thorax and abdomen,

wing structure in insect orders and families of economic importance;

other body appendages in adult and immature insects;

comparative study of genitalia in various groups of insects;

PRACTICAL:

Structure of integument and its derivatives; comparative external and internal morphology of different insect orders. Preparation of temporary mounts of external and internal body organs of different insect orders
