Week 15: Wind as an ecological factor and its importance. Population Ecology: Introduction. A brief description of seed dispersal and seed bank
Air in motion is called wind. The action of wind act is an ecological factor. Its affects may be direct or indirect. Direct effects of wind are
- Plant may be uprooted and blown away by storm wind. The continuous, unidirectional wind pressure direct the plant and their branches toward the lowered side.
- The branches of large trees are broken.
- Strong wind Carriess sand particles which cause abrasive damage.
Indirect effects
- increase rate of transmission.
- Stunted growth
- Soil erosion
- Dispersal of pollen grain, seed and fruit
The study of interaction of population of an area to its non living physical environment.
Population is the study of one species occupying an area. But it depend on other resources for food and shelter. Therefore population ecology interacts with community ecology. The population ecology is not an isolated subject. It includes many other aspect of ecology.
Seed is an important source of dispersal of species of plants and responsible for genes dispersal of a population of plants to other places.
Seed bank: The storage of seed in the soil is called seed bank. Seed bank play an important role in primary succession. Seed bank regulate the population size of the plants in the normal conditions.
