In the course of the last few decades, social policy has increasingly become an international field of study. In Social and Public Policy we look at how social policy issues are constructed and contested in contemporary society. This course aims at understanding and addressing social issues by examining the formation and implementation of policy, and its impacts on wellbeing of people. The course will introduce a range of analytical and theoretical perspectives related to policy issues; it will also consider views about causation, the problem of 'proof' and the kinds of enquiries that arise through particular positions, values and settings and finally effect on social and public policy. The course aims at enabling students to comprehend opportunities, challenges, resource constraints, and systemic impediments that characterize the all spheres of public policy. It will help students to gain skills to develop viable policy solutions to accelerate the pace of social and economic development in the country. Course is divded into eight units. Each unit will be covered in two lectures(three hours each). Altogether 16 lectures will be delivered to cover the approved course content. Additional Unit nine is dedicated for case studies.
Assesment Criteria:
Students are required to write a policy analysis paper that demand students to research an issue of public concern. It can be an issue of ongoing political debate or an issue that has not yet gained the attention of policy makers. They are expected to define the problem or issue at hand, describes its background and provides a balanced assessment of options that policy makers could pursue to resolve the problem. The paper should conclude with a recommended course of action for policy makers.
