INTRODUCTION TO COURSE

Illustration is a branch of Communication Design in which we learn that how to visualize text. So the text passages can be more comprehensively understood and visualized by the readers. It found in many forms or styles both traditional and digital. 

The objectives of this course would be to make students improve their imagination, observation and drawing skills along with their understanding of text-image relationship.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Create illustrations from the development of the original concept to final execution.
  • Familiar with variety of mediums for both traditional and digital illustrations.
  • Apply theories and principles of design and communication to the development of effective illustrations.
  • Communicate visually using drawing as a means of visual exploration, idea analysis, problem solving and expression of thought.
  • Use a variety of mediums and styles to create, capture and manipulate illustration elements in producing a final product.

Unit 1:

  • The history of illustration
  • Historical product
  • Product illustration for this historical product in a modern style
  • Reproducing and altering illustration styles to help develop and enrich your own style
  • use of dry media and techniques
  • use of wet media and techniques
  • grid technique sampler
  • illustrations in brushwork, pen and ink mixed media and examine non-objective and portraits

Unit 2:

  • Visual puns in illustration
  • Various illustration styles
  • Basic drawing techniques
  • Daily sketchbook of ideas
  • Brainstorming, thumbnails, roughs and sketches
  • Different black and white media and composition
  • Design contrasts: thick/thin line, volume, texture, dark/light, transparent/opaque
  • From doodle to comprehensive Stage

 

Unit 3:

  • Daily sketchbook of ideas
  • single and multiple lines/opaque and transparency/texture and pattern
  • conceptual/narrative illustration
  • advertising/editorial illustration styles
  • comics/cartoon/caricature illustrations
  • themes and clichés/portraits and self-portraits
  • alternative, new wave, cutting edge, fringe, grunge = modern
  • critique and critically evaluate

Unit 4:

  • Product Illustration for Advertising
  • advertising illustrations for products
  • scratchboard technique
  • Modify an existing product illustration
  • dimensional, extended, peripheral techniques
  • scratchboard and stencil composition
  • cut/paper, torn-paper collage and photo-collage
  • Illustrating various pieces of text
  • Illustrating the same text in various ways and styles.
  • Review copyright usage of imagery
