Social transformation is a commonly used expression and it generally implies an underlying notion of the way society and culture change in response to such factors as economic growth, war or political upheavals. The course begins by reviewing what both development and states are? The course is concerned to explore the relationship between the state and society with particular emphasis on how this has evolved over the time. After setting out some of the contemporary challenges facing societies, it begins by considering the main theorists like Polanyi who addressed this relationship, whose ideas and arguments continue to influence contemporary social theorists.
