Objective/learning outcomes

This course is designed to trained chemistry students in mass spectrometry and its applications in the structure characterization of organic molecules. The course is designed to trained the students from basic to advance level in this particular technique. In this course, mass spectrometer, ionization and ionic source, mass analyzers, metastable ion, ion detection and recording will be studied. Students will be given task to structure characterization from spectra generated by mass spectrometric techniques. The advanced modes of mass spectrometry will be studied in detail, e.g., electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI), field ionization (FI), field desorption (FD), fast atom bombardment (FAB +ve and FAB –ve), plasma desorption, thermospray and electrospray mass spectra. Students will be practically trained in fragmentation pattern of common functional group. Structural elucidation using mass spectrometry in conjunction with other spectroscopic techniques will also be taken into accounts.
