Cerebral Cortex, Intellectual Functions of the Brain, Learning, and Memory
It is ironic that of all the parts of the brain, we know the least about the functions of the cerebral cortex, even though it is by far the largest portion of the nervous system. However, we do know the effects of damage or specific stimulation in various portions of the cortex. In this lesson, the known cortical functions will be discussed, and then basic theories of neuronal mechanisms involved in thought processes, memory, analysis of sensory information will be explored.
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to learn about;
- The Orginization of the cerebral cortex
- The Location and functions of diffrent areas the cerebral cortex
- Differentiate between the sensory and motor cortex and their functions
- The motor pathways including pyramidal and extrapyramidal
- Speech disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Cerebral damage and its effects and uses of EEG
- Components and functions of Limbic System
- Emotion, Behaviour and Motivation
- Neural Mechanisms involoving learning and memory
- Memory disorders
