Week 7-8 : Geotechnical studies of rocks and soils
Students will be able to choose the better type of soil & durable rock for construction purposes
Rock-soil aggregate is generally considered a highly complex discontinuous material. Because the mechanical characteristics of rock and soil are different and the interactions of rock soil are complicated, the mechanical characteristics of rock-soil aggregate are unlike a homogeneous material. Instead, the characteristics depend on the particle size distribution and the microstructure characteristics. The shear strength is a key mechanical characteristic of rock-soil aggregate related to the slope stability evaluation, and the cohesion and friction angle are usually used to describe the shear strength of the rock-soil aggregate. The cohesion and friction angle of rock-soil aggregate are influenced by the particle size distribution characteristics and other conditions, especially the water content.
