Secondary metabolite compounds produced constitutively are called phytoanticipins, whereas those produced in response to attack by a pathogen are called phytoalexins. Pathogens respond to these chemical defenses of the host plant through genes that help pathogens avoid them, degrade them, alter their physiology, or through other mechanisms.
