DESCRIPTION

In this course weeds will be studied in relation to their impact on agricultural production. Principles of preventive, mechanical, chemical, cultural and biological weed control will be outlined. Weed identification, sprayer calibration and herbicide application will be performed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, student should be able to:

  • Get knowledge, facts and information from different sources, related to weed biology and management.
  • Critically evaluate the importance of different weed management approaches.
  • Identify most common summer and winter weeds of field crops found in Pakistan.
  • Be able to identify and apply herbicides for the control of weeds in different crops.
  • Be able to understand herbicide resistance and integrated weed management.
  • Guide the farmers about the weed problems, and their control.

  3. Classification and biology of weeds.
  4. Weed-crop interference, Competition and allelopathic interactions.
  5. Methods of weed management; preventive, cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical.

  7. Integrated weed management.
  8. Herbicide resistance and tolerance against weeds and crops. Technical information regarding current herbicides.
  9. Mulching and soil solarization.
