Globular proteins & Heme Metabolism

 

Introduction

 

                         Hemeproteins are group of specialized proteins that contain heme as a tightly bound prosthetic group. Three dimensional structure of the protein determine the function of individual hemeprotein. Most abundant hemeprotein in humans are hemoglobin and myoglobin that reversibly combines with oxygen. Other hemeprotein are enzyme catalase and microsomal CYP monoxygenase system in the liver.

Course Prerequisite

Students must have the Basic Knowledge of protein chemistry including structures of proteins and functions of various hemeproteins.

Learning outcome

 

   On The successful completion of this course students will be able to

 

  1. Understand the structures and functions of major Hemeproteins including hemoglobin & myoglobin.
  2. Understand the biochemical basis of various diseases due to abnormal production of Hemoglobin.
  3. Explain the synthesis and degradation of heme in human body & various defects in these metabolic pathways.

At the end of this course, Assessment test comprising THEORY (MCQs and SEQS) and VIVA shall be conduct which would add up to the Annual internal assessment of the students.
