Plant systematics is a science that includes and encompasses traditional taxonomy; however, its primary goal is to reconstruct the evolutionary history of plant life. It divides plants into taxonomic groups, using morphological, anatomical, embryological, chromosomal and chemical data.

Aims & Objectives

Plant systematics is the study of flowering plant diversity. Through the lectures, laboratory

exercises, students will learn:

1. How to describe and classify plant diversity.

2. The major features and evolutionary origins of vascular plants.

3. What causes selection on, and variation in, plant characteristics

4. A “Vocabulary” of plant description.

5. Identification of plants using dichotomous keys.

6. Recognition of important angiosperm families

7. Gain some knowledge of the local spring flora

Assessment criteria:

  • Sessional (Attendance, assignment & presentation) 20 Marks
  • Practical Exam           20 Marks
  • Mid Term Exam         20 Marks
  • Final Term Marks       40 Marks
