The students will be able to recognize the characteristics of major chronological developments and relate literary works and authors such as Hardy, E.M. Forster, and Eliot to major themes and issues related to literary devices such as irony, symbolism, Femisnism, Post-colonialism, Imperialism, stream of consciousness etc.

Students will be able to recognize the development of character and plot in the novel and will be able to identify specific connections between characters, and between character and other elements such as setting. Students will learn a method of analyzing novels by starting with a character and moving to other elements and will identify the most effective elements of selected novels.
