CHEM – 485, Molecular Spectroscopy, MSc 3 (M &SS) & BS VII (M &SS&ExPPP)

This course is designed to make students able to know the basic theory behind any type of spectroscopy. Molecular spectroscopy refers to the field of looking at molecules using electromagnetic radiation. This technique is used both to detect and to manipulate and understand molecules. The information obtained from molecular spectroscopy relates to the energy levels and the shapes and charge densities of molecules.

Course Material

01 Week 1:Classification of spectroscopy. Rotational spectra of rigid linear molecules and determination of bond lengths. The stark-effect.

02 Week 2:Harmonic and anharmonic oscillator models for the energy of a diatomic molecule.

03 Week 3:Types of vibrational modes. Interpretation of IR spectra of simple molecules.

04 Week 4:Fermi resonance, applications and sampling techniques.

05 Week 5:Types of electronic transition.

06 Week 6:H–atom spectrum, energies of atomic orbital, electronic angular momentum and the fine structure.

07 Week 7:H–atom spectrum, energies of atomic orbital, electronic angular momentum and the fine structure.

08 Week 8:H–atom spectrum, energies of atomic orbital, electronic angular momentum and the fine structure.

09 Week 9:Idea of Raman scattering, Rayleigh scattering and molecular polarizability. Rotational Raman spectra of linear molecules.

10 Week 10: Idea of Raman scattering, Rayleigh scattering and molecular polarizability. Rotational Raman spectra of linear molecules.

11 Week 11: Idea of Raman scattering, Rayleigh scattering and molecular polarizability. Rotational Raman spectra of linear molecules.

12 Week 11: Symmetric top molecules and spherical top molecules, vibrational Raman spectra.

13 Week 12: Symmetric top molecules and spherical top molecules, vibrational Raman spectra.

14 Week 13: Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
