INTRODUCTION :

The test of any civilization is the measure of consideration and care which it gives to its weaker members.

Mother and children comprises almost 60 to 70 %  population of most of the developing countries.By virtue of number they are the main consumers of healthcare facilities of a country. In developed countries almost 50 % of deaths occur in people age above 70 years whereas in developing countries almost similar proportion of deaths occur in children age below 5 years. From various data sources it is evident that infant , child and maternal mortality rates are higher in developing countries. Most of the causes of diseases and deaths in this group are preventable. Therefore by improving the health of mothers and children we can improve the overall health status of general population.
