Hospital pharmacy provides a platform in a hospital under the direction of a qualified pharmacist where all the medicines and related supplies are stocked, dispensed on prescription to in- and outpatients, supplied to the nursing units, manufactured in bulk, and injectables are prepared and sterilized. Besides these primary functions, a modern practice of hospital pharmacy renders more specialised services such as participation in education programs for patients, nurses and medical professionals, poison control centre activities, drug information centre, preparation of patient drug use profiles, parenteral nutrition programs, communicating new product information to hospital personnels, and research and dispensing of radiopharmaceuticals. In the current semester, students will learn the role of hospital pharmacist in central sterile supply room, small hospitals, nursing homes, and accident & emergency department. They will be enable to find the duties of hospital pharmacist as a purchasing agent and inventory manager. Moreover, they will be competent enough to gain insights into the responsibilities of hospital pharmacist woking as an important partner in conducting clinical trials of the drugs and related items; the need of the hour.
At the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of hospital pharmacy, its scope and practice. They will be able to communicate with the patients, healthcare professionals and other hospital personnels in a fruitful way.
