DESCRIPTION& OBJECTIVES

This course offers students to use the terms and concepts to learn the Scientific Method and statistical techniques employed within contemporary psychology. Students are introduced to the fundamental concepts involved in using sample data to make inferences about populations. Main objective of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts of data analysis and statistical computing.

CONTENTS

  1. Introduction: Basic Terms, Importance of Statistics in Psychology, Limitations of Statistics
  2. Frequency Distribution and Graphic Representation of Data: Data, Types of Data, Frequency Distribution, Cumulative Frequency Distribution, Estimation of shape of frequency distribution, Percentiles, Percentile ranks and interpolation, Histogram, Polygon, Pictograph, Bar Diagram, Pie Chart, Stem and leaf display
  3. Measurement of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, Mode, Properties of various measures of central tendency, Selecting a measure of central tendency, Estimation of measure of central tendency in a frequency distribution
  4. Measurement of Variability: Range, Mean Deviation, Quartile Deviation, Variance, Standard Deviation, Shepherd’s Correction, Coefficient of Variance, Z score, Estimation of measures of variability

Note: Practical exercises to be given by the end of each topic/ chapter.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

In class discussions and on assignments and exams, students will be asked to describe and discuss the key concepts and designs of research methods. Student will be asked to not only submit written assignment but present and discuss their findings in the class
