In modern business environments of constant change and turbulent external environments, the effective management of the organisation is paramount to achieving corporate success. This course introduces the theories, concepts and frameworks of management and how these lead to the effective management of a modern-day organisation. Students are introduced to the rich context and approaches of the theory and practice of management and explore the four critical dimensions of planning, organising, leading and controlling within an organisation. The course examines these four dimensions at three levels: the individual, the group and the organisation and applies them to case studies and other real-world contexts.
This course introduces students to the roles and functions of managers. The content includes an introduction to organisations and the need for and nature of management. It examines the evolution of management theory, organisational environments, and corporate social responsibility and ethics.
Course Objectives
This is an introductory course about the management of organizations. It provides instructions on principles of management that have general applicability to all types of enterprises; basic management philosophy and decision making; principles involved in planning, organizing, leading, and controlling; and recent concepts in management. The principles learned in this course will allow the student to effectively work with and through others in an organization. The course will also encourage the students to explore and inquire the applicability of western management principles and theories in local settings. Besides, the course will discuss the Islamic perspective of managing businesses and organizations.
